Stephen Mayfield - CEO
Stephen Mayfield is a professor of Biology at UC San Diego. He is also director of the California Center for Algae Biotechnology, and Food and Fuel for the 21st Century organized research unit at UC San Diego. His research focuses on the molecular genetics of green algae, and on the production of high value recombinant proteins and bio-products using algae as a production platform. Steve received BS degrees in Biochemistry and Plant Biology from Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from UC Berkeley. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Geneva Switzerland he returned to California as an assistant professor at the Scripps Research Institute where he remained for 22 years becoming the Associate Dean of Biology before joining UC San Diego in 2009. In addition to running his research group and university research centers, Steve also founded Rincon Pharmaceutical in 2005, Sapphire Energy in 2007, and Triton Health and Nutrition in 2012.

Michael Burkart, Ph.D. - Chief Science Officer
Michael Burkart, Ph.D., is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego and Associate Director of the California Center for Algae Biotechnology. Originally from Texas, he received a BS in Chemistry from Rice University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. The Burkart Laboratory pursues interdisciplinary research in the fields of organic and biological chemistry, with a focus on natural product biosynthesis and metabolic engineering. Dr. Burkart is a co-founder of Pareto Biotechnologies, a renewable chemicals company that develops small molecule products for the flavor and fragrance market.
Robert “Skip” Pomeroy - Director of Process Development
Skip Pomeroy is a professor in the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego. He is a member of the California Center for Algae Biotechnology, the Center for Aerosol Impacts on Climate and the Environment and Food and Fuel for the 21st Century organized research unit at UC San Diego. His research involves green/renewable chemistry, environmental chemistry and forensic analysis. Skip received his BA degree from UC San Diego in Chemistry with a specialization in Earth Sciences, a MS in Analytical Chemistry from Cal Poly Pomona, a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Arizona working with Bonner Denton. Skip followed up his PhD with a post-doctoral fellowship at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and stints at Eastman Kodak, the US Naval Academy and Nova Southeastern University. While at NSU he also served as the head of R&D for Southern Grouts and Mortars. Skip returned to UC San Diego in 2007.
